| Verizon (Bell Atlantic) lets you MANUALLY SELECT ANALOG MODE! At least
on a Motorola 7760 StarTac. Why would you want to? Unless the signal
is peak, it s. Its incredible -- Ive been using digital PCS type
phones for a few years, and you really forget just how bad analog
is ... |
| There is some truth to that statement about no digital service but analog
sounds better and has a wider coverage area and most analog phones are
capable
of a 3 watt output like my Motorola 8000 Brick phone

Maybe because hes in an area that is unlikely to see digital service for
several years? Or longer? There are places within 2 hours of Toronto where
a digital connection isnt even a memory, and analog connections can be
touch and go at times.
Given that they both work, digital is better. But if digital isnt in the
race, then analog will win every time.

| I have a couple of old analog motorola cell phones. I have seen MANY
old cell phones in thrift shops. Any thoughts on using/converting these
to trans/receive? |
| I have VoiceStream now and they cover the whole island so its pretty
good - only junk part is no analog fall back. So I just have a spare
T200 with ATT in case VS has no coverage. |

Just curious,
Does anyone have any data on the current breakdown of digital vs
analog cell phones and projections on the decline of analog and
increase of digital over the next few years.
Something like this:
|-------------------------------------------|
| | 1998 | 2000 | 2002 | 2004 |
| Digital | 10% | 35% | 75% | 95% |
| Analog | 90% | 65% | 25% | 5% |
|-------------------------------------------|
