TOKYO--This is where it all ends up, everything from bowling balls
and crooked dentures to purses, cell phones and umbrellas. Welcome to
the Tokyo Metropolitan Lost and Found, a veritable monument to the
misplaced, the abandoned, the rejected.
Drop something in a public restroom or in a subway corridor in
Tokyo and theres a good chance youll get it back, here in one of the
most honest nations on Earth, even if you dont necessarily want it.
And like so much else in Japan, the lost-and-found system is
traditional, very well organized and rigorously maintained.
Although this nondescript building doesnt get much natural light,
the 34 people who run the institution can read the seasons as easily as
experienced gardeners. Shorter days and colder winds bring skis and
snowboards over the transom. Warmer weather sprouts surfboards and
swimsuits. March--when most Japanese students graduate--brings stacks
of diplomas, while June yields wedding gifts. And any time of year, a
good . |

| Wallets, newspapers, cellular phones, books, briefcases, grocery bags
and small pieces of paper very often go whizzing by held up in one
hand over the head and supported by a 45-degree-angle elbow in
Thailand. Its almost always a woman holding the object and the most
amazing part is that with her vision partially obscured, she still
manages to cross the street without getting plowed over. It is like a
magic system of radar or something. The reason for all of this? Sun
phobia. The object being held up is to block their face, even if it is
just a tiny part of it, from the evils of tanning. |
| The trade off is not favorable. Often have I heard of officers looking for
a specific vehicle traveling through the state as a wanted individual and
in one instance I did come across that vehicle in my travels. I was able to
contact 911 with my cellular phone to notify police of the sighting.
Scanners can and do help local officials by their users providing
information that can assist their pursuits. |
